To support the concept of the program “Reducing pollution in plastic recycling craft village,” SOLEN members take a survey trip to Trieu Khuc to interview plastic recycling households.
According to the survey, recycling households are divided by different input materials. Production households are concentrated in an area, separate from residential areas, but the machinery and technology system is still rudimentary and quite old. Wastewater still does not have a centralized treatment system. In addition, solid waste and emissions are released directly into the environment without any kind of treatment. So, it is required to implement suitable mitigation measures as the environmental quality in the artisan village area is not really assured.
Is there any local policy support for the waste management effectiveness? how about community initiative as part as waste management scheme in the village, district, or provincial level? I have travelled to Nge Anh province and I was amazed with the local policy support and strong commitment from the local community as part as their waste management scheme.
Thank you so much for your comment and question. Basically there are supports from local and central governments to deal with the waste issues, especially in craft villages. But the problem is to find more sustainable supports that the waste management could be locally self-maintained. There are some community initiatives in some places in Viet Nam, some are doing well; but there is still a need to have a comprehensive management tool from central to local governments. Nghe An and other remote provinces maybe still in good conditions of waste management due to low volume of waste comparing with other urban area like Hanoi Capital and Ho Chi Minh City.
