Electricity plays an important role in all areas of life and the economy in Vietnam. Electricity development planning needs to ensure sufficient electricity supply for production, people’s livelihoods and services, while optimizing resources, reducing environmental burdens, and ensuring energy security. Developing a modern and sustainable electricity system also supports the country’s sustainable development. This requires investment in renewable energy, as well as the development of transmission systems and smart grids. The plan needs to continue to be researched, evaluated, and adjusted to meet the country’s growing needs and ensure the stability of the power system.
Faced with that requirement, PDP VIII has been approved by the Prime Minister according to Decision 500/QD-TTg dated May 15, 2023. This Plan will aim at planning the development of power sources and transmission grids. at voltage levels from 220 kV and above, industry and services for renewable energy and new energy in the territory of Vietnam in the period 2021 – 2030, with a vision to 2050, including grid-connected projects electricity with neighboring countries. To implement the above Plan, August 17, 2023, in City. Ho Chi Minh City, the National Assembly’s Science, Technology, and Environment Committee coordinated with the Science Council of Vietnam Energy Magazine to organize a seminar “Implementing Power Development Plant VIII – Challenges and policy suggestions”. The main task of PDP VIII is “Ensuring stable and reliable electricity supply for economic and social development and strong development of renewable energy sources with a view to net greenhouse gas emissions by 0 by 2050”.
The subjects of Power Development Plant VIII are power sources, transmission grids at voltage levels of 220kV or higher, and grid-linked projects within the territorial boundaries of Vietnam and adjacent to neighboring countries.
