International Day of Biodiversity (May 22th): Building a shared future for all life

This International Day of Biodiversity (May 22th) was launched by the United Nations (UN) with the theme of Building a shared future for all life. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment sent an Official letter No. 2442/BTNMT-TTTT requesting the Ministries, agencies, organizations, and local People’s Committees to carry out activities to respond to this occasion, such as enhancing conservation and promoting the multicultural value of biodiversity across the country.

This International Day of Biodiversity aims to energize and support the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, which will be adopted as part of the United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity (COP15) next year. At the same time, It will raise the importance of working together to build a general future, applying nature-based solutions to address climate change, health, and food security issues, towards the global goal by 2050 is Living in harmony with nature.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment requires authorities and organizations to strengthen propaganda and media about the role of biodiversity. Rational, effective, and economical models and solutions should use natural resources and biodiversity conservation. The community should participate in the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of biodiversity and natural heritage; promote sustainable and responsible consumption. People should not use products derived from wildlife and do not use single-use plastics.

Organizations need to integrate biodiversity conservation into their plans, strategies that have a great impact on biodiversity. For example, we should integrate biodiversity conservation into agriculture, forestry, fishery, tourism, transportation, and renewable energy; management and use of land resources, especially conservation areas, should be prioritized in national, regional, and provincial plans.

It is necessary to strengthen the implementation of the task of conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity by the provisions of the Law on Environmental Protection 2020, Decree No. 08/2022/ND-CP of the Government detailing many articles of the Law on Environmental Protection, the National Strategy on Biodiversity to 2030, with a vision to 2050.

One of the important issues of biodiversity conservation is strengthening activities to control wildlife trade and exploit migratory wild species in Directive 29/CT-TTg on some urgent wildlife management solutions, related directives, and documents. Control impacts on biodiversity such as the conversion of land and water surface purposes, unsustainable farming and exploitation methods, Invasive foreign organisms, and activities that pollute the environment.

Poster in response to Biodiversity Day (May 22)

In the long term, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment recommends that organizations develop an oriented and appropriate action program in the context of the United Nations’ decade of ecological restoration. That includes a green economy, circular economy, conservation of traditional knowledge, cultivated varieties, and indigenous livestock according to the recommendations and guidelines of the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Digitizing the management of natural heritage and biodiversity should promote and be suitable for the e-Government of the Natural Resources and Environment sector. Implementing solutions to restore the ecosystem, establishing and strengthening information systems on biodiversity, and IT applications to connect with localities and each natural heritage region. Developing and implementing digital transformation projects, enhancing energy force, technical infrastructure, equipment, and tools, conducting a survey, inventory, monitoring, report making, and building and operating a biodiversity database.
