The reason why we should use public transportation
Public transport eases congestion, reduces emissions, and gives you plenty of time to see people and get to know your neighbors. Besides that, public transport allows you to relax, read a book or take a nap during your commute instead of stressing and feeling road rage.
So, what are the top public transport tips?
We will focus mainly on buses, trains, and ferries/boats, whether used for a daily commute or just for getting around in this article. For somebody who wants to leave their car/motorbike at home, these tips will discuss the value of public transportation in your community.
1. Find the suitable route
If you are not certain about public transportation, start with a small goal of taking it at least one day a week until finding a route that is appropriate for you. Before knowing it, you can make a friend or ask other people to show you a suitable way.
2. Try the bus or train for the long trip
Buses, trains, light rail, and ferries often have dedicated routes that travel faster than if you were alone in a car, which can cut travel time. But if you still want to drive, why don’t we use a carpool? Each of these options is much better than going by plane.
3. Go to school on foot
Many children live close enough to walk to school, but very few. Instead of driving your kids a few blocks, walk with them or allow them to take the bus to school. Go further by helping organize a walking bus for other kids in your neighborhood.
The walking bus is not a vehicle but a way to encourage children to walk to school instead of having to drive them to school. Children walk in small groups, led by a supervisor, and pick up passengers at timed bus stops along a predetermined route to school.
4. Take a taxi
It is a form of public transport because when you don’t need it others can use it. Pay attention to booking with a greener option such as Uber, Grab, Be, etc.
5. Telecommunications
Don’t drive to the office or fly to the conference, if you can arrange to complete your work/presentation online or via videoconference. Video conferencing uses only up to 7% of the energy used for a face-to-face meeting. In the age of the internet, many tools make remote working an efficient and effective way. In the COVID-19 pandemic, digital transformation and remote working have proven their effectiveness.
6. Buy monthly tickets to save fares
Round-trip, weekly/monthly, or bus/train tickets are often significantly cheaper than one-way tickets, which will encourage you to use said bus/train more often.
7. Plan your trip
Build a timetable and route map for your journey so that you will know what to expect. Many city public transportation systems now have free online databases that will take your starting and destination points and calculate the fastest time and best route for your trip, not to mention Google Maps. That can take away the uncertainty of traveling by public transport.
8. Public transport efficiency through data
All data below is from the 2020 fact book of the American Association of Public Transportation.
9.9 billion: The number of trips Americans took on public transit on public transportation in 2019.
40%: A reduction in U.S. dependence on foreign oil would happen if one in ten Americans used public transportation daily.
10: Number of times public transport is safer than your car.
4.2 billion: Gallons of gas are saved by public transport users each year.
$10,000: The amount each household saves by using public transportation and living with less than one car.
