Question
Plastic waste pollution has now become a complicated problem in Vietnam. Therefore, Vietnam has taken actions to deal with this environmental problem, and this is important for the country’s future sustainable development. According to Decision No. 1746/QD-TTg of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE, 2019), Vietnam sets goals to reverse the trajectory of plastic waste when committing to gradually reduce the amount of plastic waste in seas and oceans at 50% by 2025 and 75% by 2030. In addition, single-use plastic will be eliminated at coastal tourist attractions and marine protected areas by 2030. Along with that, changes in the Law on Environmental Protection in 2020 (National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, 2020) has issued many new regulations related to the management of plastic waste at source and regulations related to the production, use and recycling of plastic waste. This report will clarify some points and directions to solve the problem of plastic waste in Vietnam in the coming time.
